One of Glow Recipe's original claim to fame was its Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask (reviewed here), which was discontinued last month to make room for the new and updated Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment (C$53 for 60 ml). Essentially a revamped version of the original, this new overnight treatment promises dramatically smoother, glowing skin. Packaged in the same adorable pink glass jar, the Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment has a runny, lightweight gel consistency similar to that of the original Watermelon + AHA Glow Sleeping Mask. I do recall, though, that the original formulation settled quite a bit, requiring a good mixing before every use. The new Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment, however, appears well emulsified and does not separate. Nevertheless, because of its runny consistency, the product needs to be scooped out with some sort of spatula, which unfortunately is not included.
At a glance, the new Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment has a pretty different ingredient list as compared to the original sleeping mask. Let's first go over what remains the same. The Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment remains formulated with two types of AHAs (glycolic acid and lactic acid) for chemical exfoliation and the product still contains hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate, to be more specific), although 7 different molecular weights are now included to maximize hydration.
Looking at the changes, the main difference that I spot is that the new Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment no longer contains silicone. This ingredient was quite problematic in the original sleeping mask as it caused significant pilling and a generally unpleasant slippery finish. The new formulation suffers neither problems. It has a fresh, weightless finish that leaves no residue once absorbed. A new key ingredient is niacinamide, a pore-tightening vitamin that further refines the appearance of the skin. The updated formulation also swaps out a few of the original botanical ingredients for new ones like quinoa peptide, lentil extract, apple extract, and moringa oil.
With the same refreshing watermelon scent, the new Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment kept what worked with the original (i.e. the watery, lightweight formulation), fixed what didn't work (no more silicone), and added a whole lot of new, skin-loving ingredients (ex. niacinamide, quinoa peptide) to amp up the glow factor. The formulation is effective yet gentle but as Glow Recipe recommends, the mask is best used only 2 to 3 times a week. So my two cents are that if you didn't love the original formulation due to the pilling issues, then you will appreciate the changes. If you loved the original formulation, then you will definitely love this new one!
