Dior has reinvented its iconic Rouge Dior Lipstick range with four new finishes and a refillable packaging that feels more couture than ever. Available in 75 shades and a new universal balm, the
Rouge Dior Refillable Lipstick (C$48 for 3.5 g) is formulated with smoothing pomegranate flower, hydrating red peony, and nourishing shea butter. I've got a handful of shades to share with you today. To read my reviews and see some swatches, click......
Packaging:The Rouge Dior Refillable Lipstick comes in a silver and black lipstick case not too different from the original Rouge Dior. Instead of the cannage-etched silver band running across the entire width of the lipstick, the new refillable packaging has the iconic Christian Dior "CD" logo studded onto the tube as well. The inner lipstick bullet is easily removed with a tug and lipstick refills are available for purchase to reduce waste.
Formulation:The new Rouge Dior Refillable Lipstick offers 75 shades divided into four different finishes: satin, metallic, matte, and velvet. In addition, there is a special "000" Rouge Dior Universal Lip Balm that promises a 24 hour hydration. It can be used alone or as a primer for other Rouge Dior shades. I have colors from only the satin, metallic, and velvet range so I will review the shades individually below.
080 Red Smile Satin: A bright warm red with a luminous, semi-sheer finish, this shade is very fun and flattering. The formulation is slick and smooth and the color feels comfortable and hydrating on the lips.
756 Panache Metallic: This is a fun girly pink filled with a fine dusting of frosty shimmers. Similar to "008 Red Smile Satin", the shade has a slick and hydrating formulation that gives the lips a luminous finish.
760 Favorite Velvet: A deep pinkish-red, "760 Favorite Velvet" swatched slightly lighter than it appears in the tube. The finish has a hydrating yet semi-matte finish but the pigmentation was not as rich as I would have wanted. The swatches below definitely required several swipes but the color really isn't very buildable so I can't actually get a very opaque coverage.
976 Daisy Plum Metallic: A fun and unique berry-plum, this shade is packed with iridescent golden shimmers. The formulation is semi-sheer but buildable and similar to the previous metallic and satin shades, the lipstick feels hydrating and comfortable on the lips.
999 Velvet: A semi-matte version of Dior's most famous red lipstick shade, 999 Velvet is a warm rich red. The formulation is slightly more pigmented than "760 Favorite Velvet" but it provides the same comfortable and lightweight finish. The color is not transfer- or smudge-proof but it does wear longer than the satin and metallic shades.
Overall, the updated Rouge Dior Lipstick remains mostly unchanged with the exception of the refillable packaging and an expanded shade range. I'm a fan of the new velvet finish but would have preferred a more pigmented formulation. Of the shades I've tried so far, my recommendations are "999 Velvet" and "080 Red Smile Satin".
