One of the many spring releases that totally fell under the radar this year due to the pandemic situation was the
Clarins Spring 2020 Milkshake Collection. However, thanks to its whimsical concept and adorable packaging, the
Milky Boost Foundation and the
Lip Milky Mousse definitely caught my eyes. Therefore, I wanted to backtrack, test them out, and share my thoughts with you. To see some swatches and read my review of these cute milk-inspired products, click......
Clarins | Milky Boost (C$45 for 50 ml):
Packaged in an adorable squeezable plastic bottle designed to look like a milk bottle, Milky Boost is a liquid foundation formulated with microbeads that change color when blended onto the skin. Clarins describes the formulation as a "first-ever" but I believe there have been a handful of similar products released in the past, especially on the drugstore market. The L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream (reviewed
here) comes right to mind.
Infused with peach extract and kiwi extract and a super lovely peach scent, Milky Boost has a thin and runny formulation. The microbeads aren't palpable at all so the foundation looks and feels milky smooth. As soon as the foundation is blended, though, Milky Boost changes color, shifting to its intended shade. I have here "01 Milky Cream" (one of the five shades available), which is a light neutral ivory. Because the formulation is so thin and lightweight, it's not very smoothing or blurring. In fact, I found it quite challenging to apply the foundation without leaving a streaky finish. Even with a good foundation brush, the pigments don't sit nicely on the skin, emphasizing pores, textures, or any dry patches (as you can see in the swatches below). I personally think this foundation is only suitable for flawless, youthful skin that's looking for a very sheer coverage and a dewy finish. Given the adorable packaging and the lovely scent, I definitely wanted to love this product but unfortunately, it's a miss for me.
Clarins | Lip Milky Mousse (C$28 for 10ml):
Housed in a cute squeeze tube topped with a cushiony sponge applicator, the Lip Milky Mousse is described as a "whipped lip cream" that gives a "tinted effect" with a "peach soft finish". Available in six shades, the Lip Milky Mousse has a lightweight mousse texture that's surprisingly sheer. The color is buildable but because the mousse leaves a textured finish, I prefer a sheered-out look with a soft satin finish. The formulation has a soft candy scent and while not drying, it's also not super hydrating. The one thing I don't like about the Lip Milky Mousse is the rounded sponge applicator, which is rather large and makes it difficult to create precise lines. In terms of wear, the formulation is not transfer-proof but the color does leave behind a soft stain.
02 Milky Peach: This is a soft sheer warm pink. The color is very natural and flattering, giving the lips a hint of color that feels fresh and youthful.
05 Milky Rosewood: A sheer rosy pink, Milky Rosewood looks surprisingly similar to Milky Peach on the lips but with a warmer, dustier undertone.
