The
Pixi Glow Tonic has been my favorite alpha hydroxy acid (aka AHA) toner for a few years now and although it's not outrageously priced, I really wanted to try a cheaper alternative since I go through so much of it on a regular basis. Therefore, I decided to test out The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution. Housed in a clear plastic bottle topped with a twist to open spout dispenser (the same one you would find on a sriracha bottle), this is a water-based AHA toner infused with rose water, cornflower water, aloe water, ginseng extract, Tasmanian pepperberry, and amino acids. Free of alcohols, oils, and silicones, the formulation has a thin, watery consistency and no discernible fragrance. Via chemical exfoliation, glycolic acid (a type of AHA) loosens the bonds between dead skin cells, thereby revealing softer, more glowy skin.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution ingredient list is comparable, if not superior, to that of the Pixi Glow Tonic. The glycolic acid is a touch more concentrated (7% versus 5%) but since I use a lot of AHAs, I barely notice the difference. There's no stinging or irritation and it does a good job at keeping my skin smooth and glowy. Needless to say, I think I've found my new go-to AHA toner. At C$0.04/ml, in comparison to Pixi Glow Tonic's C$0.15/ml, The Ordinary version is so much more affordable!

Intended to reduce congestion and the appearance of blemishes, niacinamide (vitamin B3) is the star of this lightweight serum perfect for those with oily, acne-prone skin. Also free of oils, alcohols, and silicones, the formulation contains zinc for sebum production. This is my second time buying this serum and although I've not noticed a reduction in the number of breakouts (DECIEM does make it clear that this is not an acne treatment), the product does a really good job at minimizing the appearance of my pores and reducing shine. The quick-absorbing formulation leaves behind a slightly firming finish that's matte but non-drying. If you are on the market for a sebum reducing product or a serum to supplement your acne treatment, this is definitely worth a try!
