Recently, Yves Saint Laurent had a major fragrance launch described as the fragrance of freedom. Fronted by British singer Dua Lipa, Libre Eau de Parfum (C$125 CAD for 50 ml) boasts notes of French lavender and Morrocan orange blossom. I recently gave this scent a try and wanted to share with you my thoughts today. To read my review, click......
The Bottle:
With hands down one of the most striking designs I've seen in the recent years, the YSL Libre comes in a rectangular bottle topped with a lacquered black asymmetric cap. The neck of the bottle is wrapped with a gold-chain design reminiscent of chains found on YSL bags. Additionally, a bold YSL logo wraps around the front and side of the bottle. The design element that I find most interesting is the indentation of the glass around the top of the letter "Y".

The Scent:
Opening on a sweet splash of mandarin orange, YSL Libre is a strong white floral dominated by notes of lavender and orange blossom. I am very fond of the scent of lavender but the lavender in the YSL Libre smells quite cool and masculine. In fact, the whole fragrance gives off a strong masculine vibe. I guess that's fitting for the name and message behind it. However, I'm personally more fond of a soft feminine scent.
Top Notes: Mandarin Orange, Black Currant, Petitgrain
Heart Notes: Lavender, Orange Blossom, Jasmine
Base Notes: Vanilla, Cedar, Ambergris, Musk
Additionally, although there's no patchouli listed in the notes, the fragrance takes on a patchouli-esque vibe as it dries down, reminiscent of Mugler Alien or even perhaps a bit of Mugler Angel. Overall, this is not a scent for me and I don't think it's one that will easily win over the crowd. However, I do have to applaud YSL for creating something daring and non-conventional in a sea of cookie-cutter fruity florals. If you are a fan of more masculine and cool floral, this is definitely worth a try. Additionally, if you are a collector of beautiful perfume bottles, then the YSL Libre is a must-have!
