Earlier this year,
Buxom has released a new range of lip stains promising a killer color, lasting hydration, and plumping shine. Available in eight shades, the
Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain (C$30 for 3 ml) features an "innovative, lightweight serum" formulation infused with hyaluronic acid. I've got a few shades to share with you today. To read on, click......
Packaging:
The Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain comes in a chubby lipgloss tube. The tube is coated in a shiny black lacquer finish but there are clear windows in the shapes of the Buxom logo and kissy lips which let you see the lip stain color inside. The doe-foot applicator is plus-sized to help evenly spread the lip stain.
Formulation:
Infused with jojoba oil, sunflower oil, and hyaluronic acid, the Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain is a water-based lip stain with a shiny but non-sticky finish. With a thin and runny texture, the Buxom lip stain reminds me a bit of the
YSL Glossy Stains. While the formulation stains the lips, the finish remains glossy and "wet". However, whereas the YSL Glossy Stain goes on very smoothly, the Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain applies a bit patchy*, especially around the rim of the mouth. Depending on the shade as well, the finish has a milky tinge to it, which looks odd against the base color. In terms of its plumping properties, the formulation doesn't contain any traditional pumping ingredients that induce temporary swelling of the lips. The subtle "plumping" effect relies on the shiny finish and the hydrating ingredients. Additionally, it's worth noting that the lip stain has a very strong berry scent; I personally enjoy it but I think those sensitive to fragrances may find it offputting.
*For the lip swatches below, I really had to build and smooth the colors quite a bit to ensure a presentable coverage.
In terms of wear, the Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain does just okay as there's definitely smudging and transferring as the finish is wet and shiny. A stain does get left behind but it's not a super intense one. Additionally, to ensure an even stain, it's important to scrub the lips before application as any dry patches will catch more color.
Frenchie: This is a light mauve pink scattered with pearlescent pink shimmers. As mentioned earlier, this is one of the shades with a milky tinge to the finish. I personally don't like how it looks and would rather prefer a translucent shine.
Make Out: Described as a mauve nude, Make Out is a bit of an odd one. The color is not really mauve but rather a brownish-orange with a hint of mauve (and also sprinkled with shimmers). Similar to Frenchie, the finish has a subtle milky quality.
Beso: This is a deep and vampy wine red. The pigmentation and staining power are much stronger in comparison but the finish is also more patchy. I needed to apply several coats to obtain an even coverage.
Smooch: Last but not least is this soft coral nude scattered with pale pearlescent shimmers. Because this shade is lighter compared to the others, it's actually a lot easier to work with as any unevenness is difficult to detect. The color leaves behind a soft orange tint.
Overall, the Serial Kisser Plumping Lip Stain is a comfortable and hydrating lip stain with a shiny finish. However, Due to the patchy finish and the odd milky tinge on some of the shades, I'm not sure that it's a product that I would regularly reach. If you are looking for a long-lasting lip stain without any textures, I would recommend the
Clarins Water Lip Stain. If you are looking for a shiny and hydrating lip stain, then the
YSL Glossy Stain is your best bet despite the higher price tag.
