Givenchy | *NEW* Le Rouge Deep Velvet & Le Rouge Night Noir Lipstick: Review and Swatches

For Fall 2019, Givenchy has expanded its Le Rouge Lipstick ($49 CAD for 3.4 g) collection with six brand new shades and two new variations offering dramatically different finishes. With a pigmented powder-matte finish, the Le Rouge Deep Velvet Lipstick ($49 CAD for 3.4 g) is housed in a luxurious red velvet case while the Le Rouge Night Noir Lipstick ($49 CAD for 3.4 g) is a sheer sparkly lipstick encased in a glittery black and red tube. Packaging:
The original Le Rouge Lipstick comes in the iconic shiny silver case paired with a genuine leather-wrapped cap. Instead of the black leather, Le Rouge Deep Velvet is wrapped in a layer of fuzzy red velvet. The design is quite striking but it's also a magnet for dirt and debris. Therefore, you may want to refrain from toting it around in your purse. The Le Rouge Night Noir, on the other hand, is covered in a layer of black glitter scattered with a light dash of red glitters. The finish is gritty but I've not experienced any fallouts thus far.

Formulation:
With distinctly different finishes, the three Le Rouge lipsticks also have dramatically different formulations. The original Le Rouge Lipstick has a pigmented cream formulation that's lightweight and comfortable on the lips. One of the new shades is "316 Orange Absolu", a summery orange creamsicle with a natural sheen. The application is very slick and even; a couple of layers provided an opaque coverage that does fade with light eating and drinking.

Next up is the Le Rouge Deep Velvet Lipstick. With an ultra-pigmented, powder-matte finish, this new range is available in six shades. I have here "25 Fuchsia Vibrant", a bold medium pink with a super matte finish. The formulation is surprisingly smooth and creamy. There's no tugging during application and the finish is lightweight and non-drying. The color is not smudge-proof or transfer-proof but it will still last through some light eating and drinking.

Lastly, we have the Le Rouge Night Noir Lipstick, a sparkly sheer lip color available in six vampy shades. I have here "04 Night in Blue", a purple indigo scattered with bits of iridescent blue glitters. Unfortunately, this shade is a nightmare to work with. With an extremely sheer formulation, the application is incredibly uneven. Each stroke leaves behind visible patches and any contact between the upper and lower lip messes up the finish. To get the barely presentable finish in the swatches below, I spent a good 10 minutes carefully building the color and meticulously smoothing out the patches. Hopefully, this shade is not representative of the entire Le Rouge Night Noir range because unless it's paired with a dark and opaque base, it is virtually unusable.
