For Fall 2019,
Fenty Beauty has released its first-ever brow product, promising a long-lasting, waterproof, and smudge-resistant wear. Available in a whopping 14 shades to accommodate almost all natural hair colors, the
Brow MVP Ultra Fine Brow Pencil & Styler ($26 CAD for 0.07 g) features a super precise tip and a unique, build-in paddle brush. I've got a detailed review to share with you today. To read on, click......
Packaging:
The Brow MVP Ultra Fine Brow Pencil & Styler comes in a dual-ended barrel designed with an ergonomic triangular shape. On one end you have the actual liner, which is thin and precise but also fragile and brittle. One of the liners broke during shipping and this wouldn't have been a huge loss had there been more than 0.07 g of product (for comparison, a regular pencil liner has ~1 g of product). With that said, the amount you get is comparable to that of similarly styled, twist-up/retractable liners such as the
Anastasia Brow Wiz. Additionally, I didn't experience any further breakage during application.
The really unique part of the Brow MVP actually lies on the other end of the barrel. Instead of your run-of-the-mill spoolie, this liner comes with a teeny tiny paddle brush that helps blend any harsh edges to create a natural look. The design is super innovative but I do find the bristles a bit stiff. So instead of softly blurring the liner, it sometimes takes off more pigments than I'd like, leaving behind a slightly patchy finish.
Formulation:
Staying true to the goal of creating inclusive makeup, Fenty is offering the Brow MVP in 14 different shades. So even those with auburn hair can find something that will match their brows. Because I have black hair, I tested out the three deepest shades from the range. "
Deep Black" is a cool black, "
Soft Black" is a lighter warm black, and "
Black Brown" is a soft brown with prominent brown undertones. All three shades are intended for those with dark brown to black hair so it's really up to the wearer to decide which color best suits their natural hair color, complexion, and desired look.
When it comes to brow liners, a creamy and pigmented formulation isn't actually a good thing as it's easy to get carried away. Although the Brow MVP swatches fine on the back of my hand, they turned a touch too rich and heavy on my face, which has more natural oils in comparison, especially because I have oily skin. Despite this, I found the liner quite patchy and prone to tugging. Sometimes it will show up really dark while other times it won't make a mark at all, resulting in an uneven application, as you can see in the swatches below. "
Deep Black" is definitely too intense for me but I really made an effort to blend things out with the included paddle brush. However, that actually made things worse because the brush picked more pigments then intended, making even more patches that I had to go back in and fill out.
When I actually tested out the product for a full-day wear, I used the "Soft Black" shade, which is a better match for my natural hair color and pale skin. However, I still experienced similar issues with the application, although not as pronounced. The overly-pigmented but uneven formulation requires a careful application that I can't always achieve when I am in a rush. One positive feature of the formulation is that it lasts quite well. Although not 100% smudge-proof, there isn't a lot of transfer so the pigments hold up nicely throughout the day. In conclusion, the Fenty Beauty Brow MVP is not a product that I would recommend due to its uneven formulation and time-consuming application.
