Packaging:
The Matte Supreme Lip Colors are packaged in a sleek liquid lipstick tube finished with a matte ombre design. The shade inside peeks through at the base of the tube and the doe-foot applicator is petal-shaped to hug the contours of the lips.
Formulation:
Available in 12 shades, the Shu Uemura Matte Supreme Lip Color is a lightweight and flexible liquid lipstick with a smooth, gel-like texture. The pigmentation is super impressive. Just one swipe provides a fully opaque finish and one dip was enough to cover both the upper and lower lips. When first applied, the formulation feels nothing like a matte liquid lipstick. In fact, the initial moisturizing and "wet" finish almost made me believe that these were similar to the Shu Uemura Laque Supremes (reviewed
here). However, after a couple minutes, the formulation does set to a satin-matte finish. Although the Matte Supreme feels comfortable and non-drying on the lips, I would not describe it as super hydrating, especially during the winter months when my lips tend to feel constantly under-moisturized. The pigments do stay put when I press my lips together but they will transfer with light eating and drinking. After a heavy meal, I noticed significant fading at the center of my lips and there was also blurring of the lip line. So in terms of wear, the Matte Supreme Lip Color definitely lacks longevity. Because of the none-drying formulation, the lip color doesn't cling well to the lips and will smudge and transfer with light contact. I have swatched below five shades from the collection.
BG 01: This is a gorgeous neutral rose nude. The formulation is pigmented and opaque despite the softer coloration.
BR 01: A soft rosy brown, BG 01 is the perfect everyday lip color for those that love something sophisticated and understated. In terms of pigmentation, this one is the most intense out of the five.
OR 01: This is a unique brick red. The formulation is just as rich and impressive as the previous shades.
RD 01: A bold and bright warm red, RD 01 has a slightly "wetter" formulation that took a bit longer to set. The pigmentation isn't as strong as the last three but it's still opaque in one swipe.
PK 01: This is a super bright Barbie pink. Similar to RD 01, it is less pigmented and runnier in texture but the color impact is just as intense. The formulation does leave behind a bright pink stain that will stay behind even after vigorous rubbing and scrubbing.
Overall, this is a unique and stunning range of liquid lipsticks. The slick and pigmented formulation is a dream to apply and the soft matte finish feels comfortable and lightweight on the lips. I personally find the color selection just stunning but the longevity does leave much to be desired. I would recommend this collection to those looking for a comfortable matte liquid lipstick that's smoothing and non-drying. However, if touch-ups or re-application is a dealbreaker for you, then you'll have to look elsewhere.
