Yves Saint Laurent is well-loved for its gorgeous and luxurious lip products and for Fall 2018, the brand is adding a couple of new items to its lineup. I've got reviews and swatches of the
Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Matte Lipstick ($44 CAD) and the
Tatouage Couture The Metallics Matte Stain ($44 CAD) to share today. So to read on, click......
Yves Saint Laurent | Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Matte Lipstick in "21 Rouge Paradoxe" ($44 CAD for 2.2 g):
Housed in a slim and chic black and gold case, the Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Matte Lipstick features a square bullet intended for a neat and clean application. Available in 16 bold colors, the lipstick features an ultra-matte, super pigmented formulation. "
21 Rouge Paradoxe" is a stunning deep red. The shade looks warm in my swatches below but in person, it has more of a cool undertone. Now because the formulation is super pigmented and matte, the color tugged and skipped quite a bit during application. The square shape, which is designed to make the application more breezy, actually made things super challenging.
Lipsticks have been teardrop-shaped for decades so there's clearly a good reason for it. I rarely use lip brushes nowadays but in order to get a presentable finish, I had to apply this one with a lip brush. Overall The Slim Matte Lipstick packaging looks super cool and sleek but it makes application very difficult. The formulation is definitely on the dryer side but in combination with the intense pigmentation, the wear is very impressive. The shade "
21 Rouge Paradoxe" is definitely a winner here and despite the less than perfect packaging, I would still recommend checking in out in person because my swatches don't do justice.
Yves Saint Laurent | Tatouage Couture The Metallics Liquid Matte Lip Stain in "103 Tribal Copper" ($44 CAD for 2.2 g):
I've heard lots of great things about the YSL Tatouge Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stains but I've not tried any shades from the original lineup so this new metallic shade was my foray into the collection. Housed in a frosted tube paired with the signature black and gold cap, The Metallics Matte Stain features a special spatula-like applicator that actually works really well at evenly and smoothly distributing the product. The new metallic lineup is available in 7 shades and I have here "
103 Tribal Copper", a soft metallic bronze with a warm gold sheen. The product applies like a smooth liquid lipstick and it sets quickly to a true matte finish that's lightweight and surprisingly hydrating.
However, the finish is not dry to the touch, even after a good ten minutes. Therefore, the metallic pigments will transfer during eating and drinking and as you can see from my swatches below, minor patchiness will appear if you press your lips together, causing little bits of color to transfer between the upper and lower lip. Additionally, at least with the shade "
103 Tribal Copper", there was zero staining so I'm not sure why this is called a lip stain. Overall, my feelings for the Metallic Tatouage Couture is a bit mixed. On one hand, I love the true matte finish, the unique metallic effect, and the lightweight, hydrating wear. On the other hand, however, the product does not settle completely so the finish is prone to transferring and patching.
