Earlier this summer, a fellow makeup enthusiast I met through blogging gushed about a super affordable sunscreen from the well-known Korean beauty brand Etude House. She told me that it was the best sunscreen she's ever used and that it's perfect for oily skin. I've tried many sunscreens in the past and have been perpetually disappointed with their greasy, icky texture so I honestly didn't really believe her. However, after seeing that it was only about $15 on Amazon and received glowing reviews from just about every customer, I took a chance and ordered one. So is the Sunprise Mild Airy Finish SPF 50+ Sunscreen ($15 CAD for 55 ml) as amazing as everyone says? Read my review to find out......
Packaged in a carry-on friendly squeezable bottle equipped with a small spout opening, the Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sunscreen is a lightweight mineral sunscreen that provides an SPF protection of 50+ and high UVA and UVB protection (PA+++). With a runny, liquid formulation that feels silky and smooth upon application, the sunscreen felt very silicone-y at first which got me very worried. As someone with oily skin, I loathe how silicone sits on top of my face, adding a palpable layer of residue that mixes with my sebum and pills whenever lightly disturbed. With the Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sunscreen, however, the formulation felt a little slick and slippery only for a few minutes before completely drying down to a matte, weightless finish that clung well to the skin.
Instead of sitting like a heavy, greasy mask, the sunscreen felt like a thin, matte primer. The formulation does leave a subtle white cast but it won't be noticeable on those with fair to light-medium skin, especially if it's used under foundation. Makeup application was a breeze over this sunscreen and I did not experience any patching or pilling. What's even better is that not only did the sunscreen not get greasy as the day wore on, it actually reduced oil production! My T-zone still got shiny but the oil was noticeably diminished. I've tried many supposedly dry-touch, oil-free, and non-greasy sunscreens in the past but the Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sunscreen is the only one that truly stands to its claims. And for only $15, the value is unbelievable!
The bottle I got from Amazon doesn't list the ingredients in English but I managed to pull the full list (see below) from the Etude House website. The formulation is heavy on silicones and alcohol but I'm not complaining because the product performs so well. It is also formulated with hyaluronic acid and a plethora of impressive botanical oils and extracts (i.e. aloe juice, acerola extract) which explains why the sunscreen feels so pleasant on the skin. Overall, this is an absolute must-have! If you have oily skin and struggle with slick, greasy sunscreens and are looking for some SPF protection that you can wear with makeup on a daily basis, then definitely check this out!
