2018 is a big year for
Kat Von D as it marks the 10th anniversary of her beauty brand. So in celebration of this joyous occasion, Kat Von D has released a limited-edition
10th Anniversary Collection that really kicks things into high gears. Lacquered from head to toe in gold chrome, everything in this collection is bold and luxurious. I've got full review and swatches to share with you today. To read on, click......
Kat Von D | 10th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette ($62 CAD for 16 x 1.7 g):
Housed in an exquisite palette adorned with an original artwork by Kat Von D, the 10th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette includes 16 colorful shades. Gorgeous shadows aside, the packaging is just stunning. With a luxurious weight, the chrome gold palette feels sturdy and the artwork on the lid is printed and embossed with textures to give it a real painting quality. Included are 11 mattes and 5 shimmers. The overall formulation is great. The mattes are silky, non-chalky, and nicely pigmented while the shimmers are buttery and rich. The shade "Adele" and "Lala" went a little hard-pan while I was swatching but those are the only issues I can identify. Kat Von D is known for bold and unique eyeshadows and while this palette is vibrant and fun, it still has a number of wearable and practical shades with a few pops of brights here and there.
Kat Von D | 10th Anniversary Metal Crush Extreme Highlighter in "Gold Skool" ($36 CAD for 4.8 g):
Housed in a shiny gold compact, the "
Gold Skool" Metal Crush Extreme Highlighter is a "hyper-reflective" gold powder highlighter with a super creamy and slick formulation. Appearing as a white powder with a golden sheen, this highlighter actually applied completely "sheer" in that the formulation does not contain any base color. All you get are fine golden shimmers and although they are very buildable, the effect is more sparkly than sheen. I personally don't like the look of too much sparkles on my cheeks so this is not the highlighter for me. However, the formulation is very smooth and it's packed with a ton of shimmers that could work as a glitter topper for the eyes.
Kat Von D | 10th Anniversary Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick in "Santa Sangre" ($23 CAD for 3.4 g):
A permanent shade from the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick collection, "
Santa Sangre" is a gorgeous "poison apple" red that's now available as limited edition Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick. Housed in a gold chrome packaging, the lipstick applies smoothly and has a stunning matte finish. The pigmentation is just right and the formulation is not drying. The red is not too warm and not too cool and coupled with the packaging, it's a must-have in my book.
Kat Von D | 10th Anniversary Everlasting Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick in "Gold Skool" ($30 CAD for 5.5 ml):
Undoubtly the item that intrigued me the most, the 10th Anniversary Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick in "
Gold Skool" is a bright metallic gold liquid lipstick. This is my first time trying the Glimmer Veil formulation and I have to say that I am beyond disappointed. To start, the doe-foot applicator is very strange with its shallow slant and weird divot along the length of the wand. It barely picks up any product and the tip is too small to smooth out large areas on the lips.
Now onto the formulation. Despite being called a liquid lipstick, "Gold Skool" has a chunky, almost solid formulation. There are large masses of gold specks that are difficult to spread so the application is very patchy. After carefully smoothing on two to three coats, the finish starts to look more even and metallic. However, this was when the formulation started to really dry out. After a minute or so on the lips, the lipstick set to a crusty, chunky mask, making my lips appear like a shriveled raisin. I could barely even move my lips without the lipstick cracking and shedding. Although the finish is hardy and difficult to remove, I would not recommend eating or drinking with it because little pieces of gold specks will come off and end up all over the teeth and inside the mouth. Overall this is a complete dud. Had the formulation been a success, it would have made for such a unique and stunning lip color. However, as it stands, I would only recommend it for special effects makeup or a one-time use for a Halloween or costume party.
Kat Von D | 10th Anniversary Brush Set ($150 CAD):
Made with cruelty-free, synthetic bristles, the 10th Anniversary Brush Set includes five Kat Von D makeup brushes all dressed up in a gold chrome finish. In terms of quality, the brushes are nicely made. The head is fluffy, soft, and free from shedding. The handles are plastic but they don't feel flimsy or cheap. $150 is quite steep for the set but considering each brush sells for $30 to $47, you are getting around $200 in value. It would be nice if a storage bag or brush stand were included but this is still a beautiful collector's item that will look good on any vanity. See below for a list of the included brushes:
- No. 2 Lock-It Contour Brush ($40 CAD)
- No. 10 Lock-It Edge Foundation Brush ($43 CAD)
- No. 20 Lock-It Setting Powder Brush ($47 CAD)
- No. 25 Lock-It Precision Powder Brush ($38 CAD)
- No. 40 Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush ($30 CAD)
Overall this is an eye-catching and collector-worthy lineup. I found the Glimmer Veil Liquid Lipstick a complete disappointment and the Metal Crush Extreme Highlighter a touch too sparkly. However, the Eyeshadow Palette is simply stunning and the Studded Kiss Crème Lipstick is beautifully formulated. Lastly, while Brush Set is nicely made and theoretically a good value, $150 is still quite steep, especially given that the set does not include a case or a holder.
