Liquid eyeliners can be very tricky to apply, especially for beginners or those that just can't seem to keep their hand steady. Therefore, Stila has created a new liquid eyeliner equipped with an ultra-precise felt tip that will hopefully make everything so much easier. Packaging:
The Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner - Micro Tip comes in a sleek black pen embossed with shiny gold art deco designs. As its name suggests, this liner has a teeny-tiny "micro" felt tip measuring around 4.5 mm in length and approximately 0.25 mm in width at the tip. So not only is the felt super fine, it's also quite short. In fact, this is probably the finest and smallest liquid eyeliner I've tried!
In terms of performance, the Micro Tip has its strengths and shortcomings. Because it is so fine, the tip is great at drawing the outlines of a winged liner or creating fun, intricate designs. However, the short, thin felt tip is also quite delicate, almost a bit flimsy. When attempting to fill in any larger areas or drawing a nice, smooth line along the lashline, it tends to bend and collapse, making it difficult to maneuver.
Therefore, for ease and efficiency, this liner works best when paired with a regular-sized liquid eyeliner. You can draw the outline of the wing with the Micro Tip, and then use the regular liner to line the lashline and fill in the wing. Now for someone who really struggles with liquid eyeliners, this may be a very good option. However, for those that use a liquid eyeliner regularly, it may not be worth all the effort and investment as with time and practice, they can eventually master the winged liner. So it really comes down to personal preference and need.
Formulation:
The liner ink for the Micro Tip is exactly identical to that of the original Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner formulation. I used this liner for quite some time in the past but I can't say that it's my favorite anymore. It's undoubtly pigmented and easy to apply but I find that it tends to patch and bunch when layering. Additionally, as compared to the IT Cosmetics Superhero Liquid Liner (reviewed here), it is not as long-lasting. As its name suggests, the formulation is waterproof but it will still smudge a bit if you tend to get, oily, teary, or sweaty. With all of that said, even though the Stila Stay All Day formulation is not my personal favorite, it still ranks high amongst its competitors.
Overall this is not a must-have item for me. The Micro Tip is indeed one of the thinnest I've seen and perfect for creating very intricate designs. However, because it's so delicate, it's not multi-functional and difficult to use along the lashline or filling in larger areas. If you are someone who often wishes for a finer tip for creating the perfect winged liner, then the Micro Tip may be worth checking out. For most people though, I think a regular-sized liner will suffice with enough practice and patience.
