Clinique released the
Beyond Perfecting Foundation a few years back and for 2018, the brand is expanding the product line with an 18-shade concealer range called the
Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer Camouflage + 24-Hour Wear ($25 CAD for 8g). Promising a full coverage that's waterproof and transfer-resistant, the concealer helps achieve a beyond perfect complexion that's free of settling, caking, and creasing. I've got a review and swatches of all 18 shades to share with you today. To read on, click......
Packaging:
The Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer comes in a simple squeeze tube. You get 8 g of product and the packaging has a tapered spout opening that makes it easy to control just how much product gets dispensed. The overall packaging is very practical, there are no bells and whistles but it gets the job done.
Formulation:
With a creamy-rich consistency that's not too runny and not too thick, the Beyond Perfecting Super Concealer provides a medium coverage buildable to a full coverage. The formulation is easily blendable and it layers well on top of liquid foundations. The formulation sets quickly but there's plenty of time for blending and layering without moving the product around too much. One noticeable drawback is that the concealer oxidizes noticeably. All the shades turn slightly darker and warmer but the good thing is that they do so within minutes of application so you can still easily find your perfect shade in stores as long as you give the formulation ample time to set. Another thing I've noticed is that the dried concealer finish affects powder application. After applying foundation, I spot-concealed a few blemishes on my cheeks and when I went to apply powder blush, the areas where I applied the concealer doesn't pick up color as well. This is not a deal breaker as I mostly only use concealers for the undereye or jawline but it's certainly worth noting.
In terms of wear, these performed very well. There was minimal fading and settling but I did notice some tiny creasing around the undereye area. The range includes 17 shades and one Apricot Color Corrector, which is a medium orange-beige designed to counteract the blue and purple discoloration of the undereye area. I've never been a big fan of the color-correcting trend and the apricot color is definitely too dark for those with fair skin. For me, just the regular shade in "
02 Very Fair" gets the job done.
The overall shade range is certainly extensive as compared to most other brands' but I think the choices are still slim for those with darker skin tones. Additionally, those with very fair skin may also have a difficult time finding a match. I'm not extremely fair but I still can use "02 Very Fairy", the lightest shade in the range. All the lighter shades appear very pale in the tube but oxidize immediately after application.
Overall I think this is a pretty solid concealer range! The packaging is practical and sanitary while the formulation is buildable and long-wearing. The shade range is fairly extensive but the options are still limited for those with very fair or very dark skin tones. Additionally, the pigments do oxidize considerably so you have to color match in person instead of relying on how the shades appear in the tube.
Please Note: For all the arm swatches, I gave enough time for the colors to fully oxidize before taking the photos so they appear as accurate as possible.
