Launched back in September 2017, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna has seen a lot of success, thanks not only to the star power of the singer but also the high-performance, wide-range of color selections. Recently, the brand has released a new lipstick collection called the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks ($23 CAD each) so as a huge fan of matte lip colors, I had to check them out. Packaging:
The Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks come in a slim plastic lipstick tube coated with a reflective rose gold finish. The bullet has a slanted, flattened tip and it's embossed with the Fenty Beauty "FB" logo. The packaging looks very chic and trendy but it feels slightly flimsy when you actually hold it in your hands and that's probably due to the fact that the packaging isn't weighted, as is with most mid-range to high-end lipsticks. With that said, these are pretty reasonably priced for a brand found at Sephora ($23 CAD or $18 USD for 1.7g) so I can't complain too much.
Formulation:
With so many matte lipsticks on the market nowadays, it's hard to find new products that truly stand out from the rest. However, the Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipsticks are actually pretty impressive! With a velvety-smooth and super pigmented formulation, the colors glide on like a dream and feel so lightweight and non-drying. Rihanna promised some intense colors with this line and that's exactly what you get here. Even the lighter nudes are saturated with pigments. There's zero bleeding and the color sits nicely on top of the lips with minimal bunching or creasing. Best of all, these have a true matte finish because a lot of times, a creamier formulation results in a slight sheen that's "satin" at best. In terms of wear, these will transfer and fade with eating or drinking but there are enough pigments that the color will last at least five to six hours. The color range is a bit limited in terms of the wearable shades. There are a lot of bold and unique rainbow colors to choose from (lavender, green, blue, purple, you name it) but I do hope that the range gets expanded with more pinks and reds. So overall, if you are a fan of rich, long-wearing matte lipsticks, then definitely check out this line. See below for a breakdown of four of the more wearable shades from the collection.
S1ngle: A warm peachy beige nude, S1ngle is slightly sheerer in comparison to the other three shades. Don't get me wrong, the formulation is still very pigmented and creamy for a shade in this range but the application doesn't feel as opaque and full-coverage.
Spanked: This is a sophisticated dusty rose. The formulation is super smooth and the pigmentation is through the roof! If you are a fan of wearable rosy nudes, then this is, without a question, a must-have lipstick!
Ma'Damn: A true medium red, Ma'Damn is very pigmented and intense. The formulation feels drier in comparison to the other three shades so the application tends to tug a bit. Therefore, I recommend using a lip brush to achieve a clean lip line. With the drier formulation, however, the color wears longer and is less prone to transferring and fading.
Candy Venom: A hot, sizzling medium pink that's almost a bit neon, Candy Venom is intensely pigmented and velvety smooth. The color is definitely not an everyday kind of lip color but for special occasions, it's a head-turner.
