Kat Von D is well known for her
Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks and recently, the brand has launched a full range of water-resistant, weightless lip liners called the
Everlasting Lip Liner ($22 CAD). Available in 30 shades ranging from neutrals, pinks, reds, to crazy blues and greens, the liners promise a hydrating wear that's free from skipping or dragging. So, are these really as amazing as they claim? Read my review to find out.......
Packaging:
The Everlasting Lip Liners are housed in a sleek twist-up and retractable pencil. The lead is thicker than your average pencil liner and the tip is initially sharpened to a point. The formulation doesn't seem to suit the packaging very well as I experienced repeated breakage with all three shades I have here.
Formulation:
I don't use lip liners often so I can't say that I'm an expert in this category. However, from what little experience I have, these Kat Von D Everlasting Lip Liners are very disappointing on multiple fronts. I guess you can describe the formulation as creamy and soft, as the lead kept on breaking whenever I'm not too careful with how hard I press or what angle to hold the pencil. However, despite the creamy texture, the application is weirdly patchy. Now there is some variation among the three shades below, but the overall texture is just not great. Once the liner is set, which happens a lot quicker than desired, you can't actually build another layer without disturbing the previous one. The product feels dry and cakey and it's noticeably heavy and crackly on the lips. With that said, the formulation is pretty long-lasting and smudge-proof. Nevertheless, with the application issues and the constant breakage of the lead, these are a hard pass for me.
X: This is a rich true red. The formulation is pigmented but the application is a tad uneven. As mentioned, the pencil doesn't build well. Once on the lips, it sets very quickly, making it difficult to go over with another layer.
D-Minor: This is described as a warm almond. Formulation-wise, it may actually be the best out of the three. The pigmentation is very good and the coverage is comparatively much more even.
Sexer: Hands down the worst lip liner I've ever tried (and I am not exaggerating). Sexer is a hot neon pink. The color is beautiful but the formulation is an absolute mess. In terms of pigmentation, the color is incredibly uneven and chalky. Texture-wise, Sexer is almost like a chalky paste. It cakes like crazy and does not build well at all. The swatch below took me forever to perfect. I literally had to use my finger and forcibly smooth out the color because there was no other way to go about it.
Honestly, I love Kat Von D but this range is just not good! Sure, the liners are very long-wearing but both the crumbly application and the cakey texture are deeply flawed. Lastly, I'd advise caution when looking at other online reviews for this product. Influenster sent out a huge batch of free liners not too long ago for consumer-influencers to test out. Everyone got the same shade (Lolita) and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. I, of course, haven't tried that particular shade. Although it may be amazing, it's probably not as representative as the three shades I have here, which have suggested otherwise about the overall quality of this collection.
