The Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Palette is arguably one of the best contour palettes on the market. So for 2017, Kat is revamping its packaging to make it more sturdy and refillable. In addition to the packaging update, Kat Von D is also adding a new 12-shadow Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette to the family. To see some swatches of everything, click......
Because of the popularity of the Shade + Light Face Contour palettes, Kat Von D has made them refillable. Each of the four shades in the palette is magnetically attached to the compact and to replace them, simply use a untwisted paper clip (or any other sharp objects) and poke the back of the palette to dislodge the pan. The refills go for $18 CAD for the highlighters (2.3g) and $21 CAD for the contour shades (4.5g). The Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette, on the other hand, is not refillable. There are three 2.3g shadows and nine 1.1g shadows, adding up to a total of 12 shades.
*Note: Only the contour palette is refillable, the eyeshadow palette is not.
Kat Von D Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette ($62 CAD):
A very neutral and wearable matte eyeshadow palette, the Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette offers up a nice variety of both warm and cool shades. Kat Von D makes some great shadows and her matte formulation is especially impressive. All the shades are very pigmented, non-patchy, soft, albeit a bit powdery. See below for a breakdown of all the shades.
Laetus: A soft cream with a dash of yellow, this is a great base color.
Lazarus: Pale taupe that's super soft and blendable.
Ludwin: Warm peach beige that's pigmented and smooth.
Samael: Soft taupe brown with a soft and smooth formulation.
Solas: Medium taupe brown with a nice and even pigmentation.
Lucius: Ivory white cream that's rich and smooth.
Saleos: This is a dark taupe brown; the formulation for this is slightly patchy but it's buildable to a decent coverage.
Shax: A very nice and pigmented carbon black, Shax is may be just a tad patchy but this is definitely one of the nicest matte black I've tried in the past.
Liberatus: Bright off-white that's very pigmented and rich.
Succubus: A beautiful cinnamon brown, Succubus is super pigmented and smooth. This is definitely one of my favorite shades out of the 12.
Sytry: A medium cool-tone brown, Sytry is very pigmented and smooth.
Latinus: A sandy beige, Latinus makes for a great blending shadow.
Kat Von D Shade + Light Face Contour Refillable Palette ($64 CAD):
Aside from the updated refillable packaging, the Shade + Light Face Contour Palette is the same as before. As I've mentioned in my previous review, this is the ultimate contouring palette. All six shades included are matte, smooth, and pigmented. Best of all, you get a good mix of cool and warm tones, so not only can you use these shades as contours (and eyeshadows), you can also use the warm browns as bronzers! See below for a breakdown of the shades.
Lucid: A cool pink nude, Lucid works great as a matte highlight for those with a very pale skin tone.
Lyric: A soft banana nude, Lyric not only works as a matte highlight, but it also works great as an all-over eyeshadow.
Levitation: This is a more neutral beige. Like the previous two shades, the formulation is right on point. It's pigmented, creamy, and very smooth.
Sombre: A soft taupe that's quite similar to "Lazarus" from the Eye Contour Palette, Sombre is my go-to contour shade as the cooler tone better mimics the appearance of natural shadows than warm browns.
Shadowplay: This is a soft brown that leans towards the warmer side.
Subconscious: This is a neutral brown on the darker side. Again, the formulation is just a dream!

Packaging:
The newly updated packaging for the Shade + Light palettes features a hard plastic compact as opposed to the original cardboard compact. The lid bears some stunning raised lettering and the inside has a large mirror. Overall both palettes are very well-made, they are sturdy yet stylish and sleek at the same time.
