Fresh is well known for its extensive mask collection but the brand has yet to carry a clay mask. So with the release of the
Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask ($72 CAD), I was pretty darn excited. I have oily-combination skin so clay masks are literally what I live for. To read my thoughts on the Umbrian Clay mask, click.......
Housed in a hefty glass jar, the Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask has a relatively runny texture compared to your standard clay mask. Because the formulation is quite liquid, the application process can be a little messy. So I would actually recommend applying the mask with a brush instead of using your fingertips. With a soft herbal scent, the mask feels instantly calming on the skin and it sets quickly to a soft, non-drying finish. The mask can also be used as a spot treatment or even a deep-cleansing face cleanser.
The Umbrian Clay mask is made mainly of "Fuller's Earth", a type of clay sourced from Nocera Umbra in Italy, The clay helps purify and balance enlarged pores and oily skin. Additional key ingredients include sandalwood oil, chamomile flower oil, lavender water, grape seed oil, and olive leaf extract. I've tried countless clay/mud masks over the years so I do think myself as a bit of an expert when it comes to this area. The Fresh Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask definitely feels gentler on the skin. When I remove it, my skin feels more calmed than "purified". Unlike a lot of clay masks I've tried, this mask doesn't dry to a tight and hard finish so it may not provide that intense, deep cleansing that you may be looking for in a clay mask. With that said, I think this is a great option for those with sensitive skin. If you find the common clay mask a bit too harsh and drying, then this one is a great option to check out. For me personally, the formulation is just
a bit too gentle. My skin doesn't feel as refreshed and deeply cleansed as it does when I use other clay masks. To take a look at previous face masks I've reviewed, click
