New from Smashbox for Summer 2015 comes a super high-impact and long-wearing gel liner called the Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner ($29 CAD). Formulated with a 36-hour highly pigmented gel formulation, the liner has a silicone tip for precise application. Today I have the "Jet Black" shade to review and swatch, to read on, click.......
Packaging:
When you see the Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner, the Benefit Push Up Liner comes right to mind as they both feature a twist up dispenser and a silicone tip with a thin slit that allows the gel liner to come out. In fact, in terms of packaging the two are really no different. The real difference lies in the formulation.
The silicone tip comes with a stop to prevent the formulation from drying; it can be removed upon first use. |
Admittedly one of the most pigmented and long-lasting gel formulation I've ever tried, the formulation of this eyeliner is way too dry (even drier than the Benefit Push Up Liner). As a result, it was incredibly difficult to attain precise and smooth lines on the lid. Within seconds, the gel stiffens and instead of gliding smoothly across the lid, it skips and drags. I in fact had to apply in a stamping motion. The method works but it compromises precision. Also once it's on the lid, the product feels drying. I have fairly wrinkly upper lids and as a result the product feels stiff and clingy.
As I said before, the formulation is indeed very long lasting. It is smudge, water, and oil proof. It's best removed with a non-oil based remover as an oil formulation will partly dissolve the product and cause it to smudge/stain everywhere.
Also as I said before about these silicone tips, they are really just not my cup of tea. I struggle with creating a nice line because it's not stiff enough, especially when paired with such a thick formulation.
The product swatches decently on smooth skin but on eyelids it's a lot trickier to work with. |
My best try, after about three attempts at creating a nice wing |
The formulation is indeed incredibly long lasting and smudge-proof. However, the super thick gel paired with a flimsy silicone applicator just doesn't work very well. I consider myself pretty decent at making winged liners but with this product I struggled quite a bit.
