It seems in the recent years there has been quite some updates and innovations done on the classic clamp hair curlers. We first had the clampless wands that gave more freedom to curling your hair. Then there was a slew of automatic curlers (the Baby Bliss Miracurl for example) that seemed almost too good to be true. Well, today I will be reviewing the Kiss InstaWave Automatic Curler ($59.99), does this new gadget make curling easier? Read on to find out......
What it is:
The Kiss Instawave Automatic Curler is a clampless hair curler with a tangle-free spinning dial that helps wind the hair onto the curler.
The curler comes with a straight barrel (1 inch) made with diamond and ceramic particles. The InstaWave Curl Dial has several prongs that catch and holds hair to help it wind around the barrel. The dial spins with the control of the left/right button that dictates which direction the dial spins.
There are two temperature settings with a maximum temperature of 420 degrees Fahrenheit. The device plugs in with a power cord and has a safety shut-off feature after 90 minutes of use.

- Turn on curler by either switching to the low or high temperature. Choose low temperature for looser curls and high for tighter curls.
- Once the barrel heats up, the light indicator will turn from red to blue. The device does make a quiet high-pitched buzzing sound, which is normal.
- Section a one or two inches of hair, touch the hair to the barrel while holding the curler upright. Depending on which direction you want to curl your hair, place the hair in front or behind the barrel.
- Press down on the dial controller, you can choose which direction the dial winds.
- Once the hair is completely wound on the barrel, hold for 5 to 10 seconds, depending on your hair type.
- Release hair by simply moving the curler straight down away from hair.
Result & My Thoughts:
I don't curl my hair too often and when I do I usually use a standard clamp curler. I don't really have any issues with my standard curler, the only thing I don't like is how time-consuming the process is. So a curler that helps me save time would definitely be a plus.
Unfortunately, I don't find this curler very time-saving. If anything, I take longer with this curler than with my standard curler. The InstaWave dial spins at a slow speed when winding the hair, which takes longer than if I just rolled up my hair with my clamp curler.
With that said though, this curler would be great for those who find it tricky to wound their hair on the curler because the dial helps do that with no error or tangles.
Another thing I noticed with the curler is that because there is no clamp, once the hair is wound on the barrel, it is very loosely kept around it so it's difficult to create defined curls.
Pros:
- Helps wind hair on the wand, if this is something you find tricky, the Instawave Dial will certainly help
- Dial spins in both directions to help create different types of waves
- Two heat settings
Cons:
- Barrel takes a long time to heat up, it took around 40 seconds to reach high-temperature settings
- I found it very hard to create tighter curlers because once the hair winds around the barrel, it is loose and not held closely to the barrel
- If you are very skilled with a standard curler, this curler actually takes longer to create curls because the dial spins fairly slowly
Overall:
This product works as it claims. The Instawave dial works nicely to help wind the hair around the barrel with no tangling. I think this is good for someone who struggles with the traditional curler but if you are already adept with your clamp curler, this may actually take longer to use. Also, the device creates more of a beachy/loose curl, so if you prefer tight spiral curls, this may not be for you.
